Football, Baseball, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis, and Golf, right now you can get just about any sport in the spectrum from pre-season to the baseball playoffs. The dream season for many SoCal residents would end with the I-5 world series featuring the Dodgers facing the Angels. While that won’t happen this year, there is always the often-uttered phrase, “wait until next year”.
Going from no NFL team in our market until recently with the Rams and Chargers moving to the Los Angeles we have returned to what would seem normal. We have two hockey teams, two basketball teams, two baseball teams one soccer team, and a wide assortment of local kids who grew up in our market returning to the top of their game like Tiger Woods. No one has showed more grit and determination than 42 year old Tiger who fought his way back to the top, odds stacked against him, too many surgeries to count, and yet, he found it within himself to become among the best again, and maybe after reaching win #80, after a 5 year drought, he could even win some more majors before he is done. You can say what you will, the stats bear it out, Tiger is the best golfer in the modern world, end of story and he grew up playing at local courses like Dad Miller in Anaheim.
In Tiger Wood’s Junior year at Stanford I met his dad Earl at the Yorba Linda Country Club. He was there for a best ball tournament sponsored by the Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce. He gave a keynote that left all us floored. Generally stating that one day his son Tiger would be the best golfer in the world. When you can reach beyond even the expectations of your father in such a moment before ever hitting a golf ball as a professional, you have done something.
Recently local Yorba Linda amateur golfer Ricky Castillo has made the news with 10 top 10 finishes. Ricky’s grandmother Lydia used to be the co-owner of the Pizza Store in Placentia, and she and her husband operated it for many years until about 5 or so years ago. Unfortunately, shortly after her retirement Lydia passed from cancer and left a great big hole where she used to be in everyone’s life she touched. She and her husband, children, and grandchildren Ricky and Derek (who both went to Valencia High School) are truly genuinely nice people and have dedicated their lives to investing into the right support for Derek and Ricky.
As a long-term customer of the Pizza Store dating back to 1985 I got a front row seat for some of it. We wish Ricky and Derek the same successes as Tiger Woods, but without all the pressures or expectations hopefully. Winning at that level must be hard enough, no one needs to add to it.
