‘Do unto others as you would have done unto you’, is a valued ideal that seems more fantasy than reality at times. Oh sure, we all know the world would be kinder, more pleasant, and even advanced to another level of sophistication if we all performed ‘random acts of kindness’ and cared more for others, whether they are less fortunate than us or not.
Social media makes it easier to ‘attack’ someone because you don’t have to face them. In the old west, saying something nasty about another might find you in a gun battle at high noon, or simply shot dead on the spot. Fortunately, our society has advanced in some areas, and there is a lot left to accomplish overall.
What would happen if at the same moment across the globe every single human being did a random act of kindness? Would the world suddenly tilt further on its access? Would time stop? While the ideal is possible, the reality of it is unlikely to ever come to fruition.
Should that stop us from being kind? NO. Should we shun the ideal just because it is unlikely? Not sure, but I do know that when I do something nice for another, I generally feel better than when I don’t. There is an unintended benefit to reaching out and helping others, as we more often than not ending up helping ourselves in the process.
In this season of Thanksgiving, the second half of the word is giving. It’s not about material things. It’s about YOU. Give of yourself to warm the hearts of someone you care about, or someone you wronged in the past. It’s not really about redemption as much as it is about simply doing the right thing, whether someone else sees it that way or not.
We can change the world one person at a time, one deed at a time, either for the better or worse. Together, we will live in a much better city, county, state and nation if everyone said or did something nice when the temptation was to do otherwise. How much difference can we make? I am not sure, but the potential seems enormous, especially considering how little effort it would take if everyone in our world did their part.
Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving as we begin the 2018 holiday season.
